I was a part of the 10 member of the "Oo sathi project" where we went to the Janwada Government school and taught English to the students of 7th and 8th standards. This was a long-term project spread out over a year. We were divided into four groups, with approximately 10 students per group. I love interacting with people in general and teaching in particular. Hence I was excited to be a part of this project. I am grateful for having a very enthusiastic team mate who shared this passion for teaching and making a difference.
There were several questions that needed to be answered. Do I teach grammar and rules? Or do we just have conversations? How was I to teach a language that came so naturally to me?
On the first day I asked them "How was your day?". They were allowed to respond only in English. The standard answer I got was "Nice". I compared this with how my other classmates responded in French class. Drawing patterns with my french class helped me see that the process of learning any language is very similar irrespective of the language itself. This observation later helped me use several teaching structures from my French class.
Another very important question was what is that I want to equip them with at the end of the course. This was a very difficult question to answer. I wanted to equip them with a lot of things. I could have to, if I had the time. However I did not know how often I could go. So the question changed to what is it that I CAN teach them effectively in a short period of time, with infrequent classes, that they can use in their day to day conversation. This was good practice for me to be willing to compromise of certain aspirations in order to make them more realistic.
Each class was different with something new to take away. Once we had planned to give them a simple comprehension passage. I could not design it during the week. However we were very determined to give them the handout. Hence we sat during lunch and quickly wrote a simple passage (taking care to use simple grammar structures and simple vocabulary) ran to the print outs and just managed to get into the bus before it left. It was hurried and chaotic, but we managed to do it. We were so happy! This happened at a later time too when we made their test papers in the last minute. This tells me that even if I am a little inefficient at times, if I make up my mind to do something, I will make sure I do it.
Another class I was unable to explain something very basic. Several things went wrong that day and the class was out of hand. My team mate took over and did a good job. Though I was happy that the class wasn't a disaster, my ego was a little to see someone better than me. However during the later classes, when I was in a better mood, it did not bother me at all that she was good. Infact it made me very happy. I also noticed that after a productive class we always felt so energized and passionate. I also felt very confident about myself. Good ideas seem to come from passion and confidence. We came up with several great ideas, like creating a textbook/ learning guide with stories and songs included.
This project also reinforced the importance of being detached. After making the textbook, we were eagerly waiting to go to their school. However they had exams and holidays and we didn't go for 2 weeks. On the third week, I was quite sure that we wouldn't go because a lot of students were absent. I even made plans for the CAS period. However we went that day! I intellectually knew the importance of being passionate but not attached to the results. That day I experienced it.
However I am disappointed because we could not finish the course. There were logistics problems and we could not take the classes we were promised. We kept trying to get more classes, but it was fighting a losing battle. The classes were very infrequent and unpredictable. Each time we went we promised them we would try to come the next week. And try we did. But it was never possible. After a point the main reason I was asking for more classes was because I did not want to leave the project unfinished. It was not so much to go teach a particular topic anymore. At this point it took some effort to accept that while it is important to be committed at some point when things are not in your control, it is very important to be able to let go. Though I do not believe in leaving projects unfinished, sometimes it cannot be helped.
The aim of the project was to teach, and I learnt a lot. Apart from discovering myself and life in general, the project also reinforced the belief that I would enjoy teaching as a career option.
Learning outcomes achieved:
1. Increased awareness of my strenghts and areas of growth
2. Planned and initiated activities
3. Worked collaboratively with others
4. Considered ethical implications of my actions
5. Shown perseverance and commitment in the activities
